Family Law is the area of law that deals with Family
related issues and domestic relations.
In England and Wales these include:
Married couples, civil partnerships and domestic partnerships (some times
incorrectly referred to as common law marriages)
Issues arising during any of these relationships which could include validity of
marriage, abuse, injunctions and occupation orders, legitimacy, surrogacy and
even child abduction
The termination of these relationships sometimes referred to as divorce or
dissolution, (judicial) separation, annulment, the financial consequences of such
termination sometimes referred to as ancillary relief, property adjustment,
settlement, alimony and (child) maintenance. Disputes with the CSA, child
custody or residence orders, child contact and parental responsibility.
In the case of separating unmarried couples, property disputes may fall to be
decided under the provisions of the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees
Act (TOLATA).
Claims under the Inheritance (Provision for family and Dependants) Act.
